Indian Black Chalcedony with Apophyllite Specimen (No4)
Indian Black Chalcedony with Apophyllite Specimen (No4)
(No4), This piece is covered in apophyllite which covers a lot of the black chalcedony but out of all of these black chalcedony pieces this one is the one that catches my eye the most. Also has a couple specs of green apophyllite. Occurring with zeolites, quartz, calcite, apophyllite & pyrite within sedimentary, igneous and volcanic rocks.
Black chalcedony is composed primarily of silicon dioxide and formed by microscopic quartz crystals. It has a cryptocrystalline structure, meaning the intergrown quartz crystals are too fine to be distinguished by the naked eye. The black colour arises from inclusions of hornblende, chlorite, magnetite and other minerals present during formation. Tiny Druze quartz crystals form on its surface than you add also in this case apophyllite that has formed with the chalcedony. Silicon dioxide with inclusions of hornblende, chlorite, magnetite and other minerals.
